SRV Biography by Craig Hopkins

I stumbled onto Craig Hopkins’ book, Stevie Ray Vaughan: Day by Day Night After Night a few years back looking for something SRV related, but it was a little too expensive for me to justify at the time ($75 plus shipping). Well, problem solved!

The book is being republished by Backbeat Books in two volumes: The first, The Early Years 1954-1982, is already out, and the second volume will be out next Fall.  It’s $32 for the first volume, but you can find it for less if you shop around, especially with the holidays looming.  I haven’t finished it yet, but this book is fantastic.  I can’t believe the level of detail.  It covers much more detail than any biography I’ve read, including details about every known performance (with setlists, when available), broadcast information, interviews with family, friends, bandmates, club owners, and others close to Stevie.  But perhaps most amazing are the photos and memorabilia in the book.  The book’s a real treasure, and Mr. Hopkins obviously put a lot of time and research into it.  And for his work, he won the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award for Literature.

Gift From a Friend: SRV Painting

Look what just came in the mail!

Nope, that’s not photoshopped, it’s an original painting (14×18 acrylic on canvas).

My old college friend Pete saw my recent post about Stevie Ray Vaughan and posted a pic of an SRV painting he had done on my Facebook page.  My reply was, “Cool, do you still have that?”  To which he responded, “Sure, and it’s yours if you want it.”

Duh.

It’s a beauty.  It’s a likeness of a famous photo, which I’m also linking below so you can see the incredible quality of his work.  Pete’s always been a very skilled artist.  As a matter of fact, he sketched a cassette jacket for a solo release I did just out of college, which I still have around somewhere (couldn’t find it in time for this post).

Stevie Ray Vaughan Tributes

Stevie Ray Vaughan died 19 years ago today, on August 27, 1990. There are some nice Stevie Ray Vaughan tributes today: Drop-d, The Music’s Over, MOJO, Ash-EQ, even ScottYork.com got into the act. You can also read about the 89 concert I saw with Stevie Ray and Jeff Beck.

When I’m jamming with someone, “How about some SRV?” is one of my first questions. Listening to Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan In Session has only fueled my passion for his guitar playing. What’s so amazing about this album is that it’s an informal jam session, complete with talking between and during the songs. It’s like you’re sitting there with Stevie and Albert while they jam. Musically, it is pure magic. Guitar Noize has a great review of the album, but just go buy it– it is fantastic.

Here’s a taste.

Stubs: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Jeff Beck (1989)

vaughanbeck1989This might just be the best concert I’ve ever seen.  As a guitar player who idolized both of these guys growing up, how could it not be?  Hindsight only adds to the case: after this tour Jeff Beck took a(nother) hiatus of several years, and within a year would come the tragic helicopter crash that took Stevie Ray Vaughan’s life (August 27, 1990).

Jeff was touring off the Guitar Shop album, with Terry Bozzio on drums and Tony Hymas on keys.
