Teaching My Son to Play Guitar

Me and James About Ten Years Ago

Me and James About Ten Years Ago

It’s hard for me to believe sometimes but my oldest, James, is now 11 years old. A few years ago, I bought him a guitar with the full intention of starting weekly lessons, but he wasn’t ready for it. He was eager to learn, but quickly got too frustrated to focus. Rather than push him, I backed off (one of my better decisions).

So here we are a few years later, giving this another go. Except that it’s different this time. Dramatically different. He is eager, patient, more mature, and has a healthy dose of determination. Plus his fingers are a little longer. As a matter of fact, I can’t seem to teach him quickly enough this time around! The first night we sat down, I had the intention of teaching him 2 or 3 open chords. He ended up learning 5. He has practiced every day, and I’ve sat with him almost as much, at his request.

We’ve had 5 lessons now, and every time we go over everything from last time, and I try (if he’s ready) to introduce a new concept or chord. Here are the things I’m teaching him.  After going over open chords I introduced him to power chords. Then barre chords–mostly for the concept that the shapes can move up the neck, but also to get some practice trying to finger them. I also introduced him to the pentatonic scale, and at his request taught him how to play part of the intro to Boston’s More Than A Feeling.  I also  showed him how to pull off, hammer on, and bend (in response to questions usually triggered by songs on Guitar Hero–I wonder if this has had a benefit for him in terms of finger dexterity…).

So, based on my experience, here’s my advice if you’re trying to teach your son/daughter guitar:

United Breaks Guitars Aftermath: United Makes Amends; Taylor Guitars Offers Guitar Repair and Air Travel Tips

UPDATE: Dave Carroll has posted a response on YouTube:

In the aftermath of the United Breaks Guitars video (posted below if you haven’t seen it), United Airlines has offered Dave Carroll $3k for his troubles, but he asked that it be donated to the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz for music education for kids…so that’s what United is doing, according to info they posted on Twitter yesterday (@UnitedAirlines).

Meanwhile, Taylor Guitars has released a video in which Bob Taylor talks about the Taylor Factory Service Center and offers tips and help for guitarists who travel by air. The air travel resources he mentions in the video are on the Taylor Web site.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s Dave Carroll’s wonderful song about his Taylor guitar being damaged by United Airlines: United Breaks Guitars:

It Might Get Loud: Electric Guitar History Through the Eyes of The Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White

It Might Get Loud is a must-see documentary electric guitar, from the point of view of three rock legends: The Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White.  It opens in NY and LA August 14, and will be “coming soon to a theater near you.”  Check out the trailer below.

Hat tip to Neal Rodriguez for the info.

Uh-oh Taylor Guitars, What Have You Done?!

Taylor 716ce LTDTHE PLAN was to pay off some debt, save some cash, and plunk it down on a Taylor 816ce for my 40th birthday next year.  So I consulted with a couple of female friends about my plan (a strategy I HIGHLY recommend guys), and presented it to my wife who voiced her…support!  Happy Bday to me!

Now, mind you, the 816ce is a pretty hefty chunk of change.  And as much as I love the sound of this guitar for fingerstyle playing, I’m still wrestling with the idea of putting out 3 bills for it.  As I’ve been following my plan faithfully and putting aside a little extra cash here and there, I’ve also been dropping by the guitar shop now & then to try out other guitars and see if I can find something just as awesome for a little less cash.

My Guitar Rig

Over at Six String Lounge, Mark Lee (guitarist for Third Day) asked us to post pictures and descriptions of our guitar rigs.  Here’s mine.

Amp: Peavey Classic 30.  I re-tubed this amp about a year after I bought it and absolutely love it.  New tubes are 3 Sovtek 5751 (pre) and 4 JJ EL-84s.

Effects Pedal: Digitech RP-2000.  More than I could ever need.  On some tunes I play without it because the amp has a nice warm punch that gets softened a bit with the pedal effects.

Guitars: My main axes are the G&L S-500 and the Takamine EG-45SC.  Also pictured is my Greg Bennett LaSalle JZ-4 jazz box.  I have a few others (don’t we all…), but these are my main workhorses.
