Rainy day documentary. I stumbled across this film on solidbody guitars on Snagfilms and it is quite good. It covers the history, development, and competition between Stratocasters & Les Pauls. Since it focuses almost exclusively on these two models, others are not discussed very much, if at all. Telecasters & SGs are covered a little bit, but other significant brands like Gretsch, Rickenbacker & Ibanez are not. Still, it’s a great film with appearances by Derek Trucks, Gary Hoey & Henry Garza. Definitely worth 50 min. of your time.

Gibson Howard Roberts 1974
My buddy Jerry over at Jerry’s Music has a sunburst 1974 Gibson Howard Roberts guitar for sale and it is gorgeous, so I had to put a picture of it on my blog. :) I had the opportunity to play it and it is one sweet guitar. Very smooth sounding & playing. If you’re looking for a new jazz box, this one’s worth a look.
The 74 Howard Roberts has the shape of an ES-175. It has a single floating neck humbucker, ebony bridge, and a tailpiece like the classic big band guitars. The oval soundhole gives it a really cool & distinctive look. Check it out, it’s a work of art!
PBS to feature Guitar Legend Les Paul

Did this guy have fun or what?
PBS will air American Masters: Chasing Sound, on guitar legend Les Paul next week. Local PBS stations control programming, so check your local listings for specifics. Les died last week at 94.
PBS has a nice tribute to Les on their Web site. The Les Paul American Masters special is also available on DVD.
My first electric guitar was a black and gold Les Paul Custom, and I sure wish I hadn’t sold it. If I can dig up a picture of me playing it, I’ll post it. It was a beauty.
Thank you, Les. Rest in peace.
