Kenny Wayne Shepherd Live in Chicago

I just picked up Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s (@KWShepherd‘s) new album, Live in Chicago, and it is fantastic!  17 tracks of pure blues bliss.

Kenny plays with blues legends Hubert Sumlin, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Bryan Lee, and fellow Shreveport, Louisiana native Buddy Fett.  What I love about Kenny and this album in particular, is how he pays tribute to the blues roots.  Check it out!

Be sure to get the “Special Edition” album which has three extra tracks, including Kenny’s smokin’ version of Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

Here’s Kenny talking about each song on the CD:

Danny Gatton & Tom Principato: How’s Your Sister?

We’re talkin’ Telecaster heaven right here…in 1984 (dig the Steinberger bass & DX-7, yeah I don’t miss those).  It doesn’t get much better than when Danny picks up the beer bottle for a little slide.  Man that guy could play.

Checking out Tom Principato’s new CD yesterday, I stumbled onto his label, Powerhouse Records, which is chock full o’ good stuff including the DVD this clip came from, Blazing Telecasters (there are also two CDs available for ya).  Turns out they got some cool stuff from another Washington, DC-based band you should know about: the Tommy Lepson Band.  They’ve also got some stuff from Tele trailblazer Roy Buchanan (FREEBIE: here’s a cool site about Roy’s custom ’53 Tele).  Makes me want to plan out my next Warmoth build…

Worship Conference – Saturday part 2

The Saturday afternoon class that had the most impact on me was the one on Effective Flow & Vertical Worship.  This is something I’ll be taking on as a personal challenge to improve the flow & worship of our services over the next few months & beyond.

The objective of flow is to create a time of worship that elevates us above the day-to-day burdens of living, into the presence of God.

There was tons of practical advice from Brian Craig and Kevin Darby, who led the class, but here are a few choice morsels:

  • Invest time & energy into worship planning (don’t just show up on Sunday morning to work it out)
  • Build & use a small, dedicated team to plan worship and divide & conquer (no one can do it all, it’s a lot of work when you do it right)

Worship Conference – Saturday

Well, I was up til 2am jammin in the hotel lobby with some guys so I didn’t get to post last night. Good times! But first I have to let my church peeps know that Jaime Turish and Chris & Kim Reed send their love. Jaime was playing lots of percussion all weekend, of course.

These are some choice morsels from Saturday morning. More to come on worship flow.

> We all love to have fun and rock the worship, but don’t neglect the meditative, powerful songs in worship.
> Starting worship more slowly can help draw people in and give a chance to settle and focus.
>We need to value diversity & each others gifts (this was a common theme throughout the conference). 1 Cor 12 is a cool scripture to look at in this regard.

Worship Conference – Friday

We just wrapped up day one of the worship conference. The best part was seeing some old friends I used to play music with, especially Jaime Turish, an amazing talent! This afternoon, Melvin Jordan, former Temptations guitarist, led a cool roundtable on guitar & bands.

Some choice morsels:

From 1 Chronicles 15, the musicians were the priests. We need to be spiritually strong. Skill is also mentioned here, we can’t discount that even though most of us volunteer our time. It’s important to improve ourselves, and also teach others to help them grow.

From Psalm 150, check out all the instruments listed. This supports a diverse worship experience, using everything available to worship God. Also check out Exodus 35:5. All five senses are covered. A similar theme. Full immersion, using everything available for praising God.
