House Plays the Blues Free Download

Last July, I posted about Hugh Laurie working on a blues album, well it’s called Let Them Talk, it drops May 9, and you can hear & download the tune Guess I’m a Fool from it now for free from his website.

The album was recorded in New Orleans, and you can hear that influence for sure.  I have to say I’m impressed with Laurie’s skills!  He not only sings and plays guitar (which you House fans already know), but he also plays piano and has that New Orleans style down!  I grew up with New Orleans blues & jazz music playing in the house all the time, and for me, listening to this music is like slipping into a comfy old pair of shoes.

DIY Pedalboard Cables

I’ve had it.  I’m making my own cables from now on.

I had a two expensive brand, few-month-old cables short out on me in the past month. Then I started googling ‘DIY guitar cables’ and there’s some great info out there.  Being a DIY guy and all, I should’ve done this a long time ago.  It’s easy, inexpensive, and you end up with custom length, hi-quality cables.  I learned a few tips along the way, so I’m gonna share it with you.

First things first, here’s my parts list, sources and prices:

R.I.P. Gary Moore

My college roommate Dave turned me on to Gary Moore. I’ll never forget him telling me how Gary was going to do a blues album. That news sure got my attention! I got Still Got the Blues and have been a fan ever since. To me, Gary had a wonderful mix of speed & chops from his rock days, soulful tastiness, and melodic grace. What a guitarist & what a legacy he left us. He is gone too soon & will be missed.

This video is from the Strat Pack concert several years back, Gary showing his stuff on a red strat playing Jimi’s Red House. Rest in Peace, Gary.

DC Music: NoCo Level Up

I have a routine I go thru with new music.  I listen to it for a few days, then put it away for a while.  Several days or weeks later, it’ll come up on shuffle on my iPod & one of two things happens: I am tempted to skip it, or it grabs me. NoCo’s new release Level Up grabs me. This trio of Justin, Jack & Will was up against my band CCB in the Guinness Battle of the Bands Finals in December, and I was blown away by their live show.  I love me some power trio, but the energy these guys put into their show is just something special.  I remember thinking to myself that this is one trio that could easily carry a stadium gig with that energy.  So when Jack let me know about their new album, I was eager to check it out.  It’s not easy to capture live energy in a studio recording, but I’m impressed with how much of that they were able to do. While the playing is polished and the harmonies are tight, there’s a definite raw energy that comes through on all the songs.  Add to that catchy melodies & some really cool & fun arrangements, and it’s a killer combo.

Paul Pfau…Keeping the Blues Alive

Local Strat-slinger Paul Pfau was featured in American Blues News mag for his tasty blues playing recently.  And I have to agree, it is quite tasty.  I shared the stage with Paul this month when our bands played IOTA (with his new band Dimestore), and they rocked it! But man this guy can play the blues! Check him out:
