Gift From a Friend: SRV Painting

Look what just came in the mail!

Stevie Ray Vaughan by Peter J. Vinton, Jr.

Nope, that’s not photoshopped, it’s an original painting (14×18 acrylic on canvas).

My old college friend Pete saw my recent post about Stevie Ray Vaughan and posted a pic of an SRV painting he had done on my Facebook page.  My reply was, “Cool, do you still have that?”  To which he responded, “Sure, and it’s yours if you want it.”

Duh.

It’s a beauty.  It’s a likeness of a famous photo, which I’m also linking below so you can see the incredible quality of his work.  Pete’s always been a very skilled artist.  As a matter of fact, he sketched a cassette jacket for a solo release I did just out of college, which I still have around somewhere (couldn’t find it in time for this post).

Pete does a lot of fantasy artwork, but check out his portraits page to see some of the musicians he’s painted, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Jim Morrison.

Pete also plays piano, and we played as a duo in college called Unnecessary Lettuce, but fortunately no recordings exist of that experiment!  ;)   I’ve always been inspired by the fact that he’s continued with art thru marriage, kids, etc…the same way I’ve continued with guitar.

Needless to say, I wanted to give Pete some love on my blog here.  If you need some custom artwork done, check him out.  Tell him Rich sent ya.

  3. Response on Slider’s Pickups:

I recently got a set of his SRV 59′s. I’m still trying to dial them in. It’s all good though. They are so dynamic– I have the neck adjusted way down flush with the pickguard, and the other 2 not far behind. And these are LOW Output, the bridge (hottest) being 5.9K! Pretty scary stuff! They’re big sounding. I’m running a 66 blackface Vibrolux and currently experimenting with a new T.REX Tonebug OD pedal for when I need to fatten the bridge pup on solos. But still dialing in the Sliders before adding to the chain. Lots of sweet spots! Rod McQueen (Slider) has been really helpful. Quite a guru. ToneQuest has featured him. Try ‘em out! He’ll take ‘em back no questions if you don’t dig them. He sells via eBay and maintains a 100% rating– and wants to keep it that way. Thanks for stoppin’ by the blog too! Cheers! JP

Hey thanks, JP! I will check them out. The more vids I hear, the more impressed I am.
