Fingerstyle Guitar Tribute to Michael Jackson
by frets on Jun.30, 2009, under Fingerstyle, Inspiration
A good friend and musician once told me that great music can transfer to any instrumentation and still hold its own. The first time I heard Tuck Andress play Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror, I knew what he was talking about. Since then, I’ve heard many more MJ tunes arranged for solo guitar, and they invariably hold their own. Here are a few fingerstyle arrangements of MJ songs I really enjoy (save one, Pete Huttlinger’s arrangement of I Want You Back, which I can’t find on YouTube).
Rest in peace, MJ.

Man, those are so great. Thanks for putting them all together in one place.
Billie Jean especially blew me away. The way that he was able to keep the bass line going through the melody–wow. I’m probably going to have to grab that one and keep it on my hard drive for later…

I just discovered Adam Rafferty (on Twitter, of all places), and I love his arrangements. Very tasteful, soulful, and true to the original. I hope to work on a couple of them over the summer. Search for him on YouTube, he has a bunch of stuff. Dude is prolific. He’s motivating me to get some stuff up there myself!

Michael Jackson is truly the King of Pop. He made a lot of great songs in the area of Pop Music. His death is a great loss to the music industry.
